What your flight map says about you

The first thing that happens when you put your whole flying history onto one globe is that you stop looking at the number.

The total distance is the headline figure, and it's the one people quote. But it turns out to be the less interesting half. What holds your attention is the shape — where the lines bunch, where they don't go, and the one route that is drawn so many times it has become a solid band.

Almost everybody's map is one of about six shapes. Here they are, and what each one is actually telling you.

1. The spoke

One airport at the centre, lines radiating outwards, nothing connecting the ends to each other.

This is the most common map by a distance, and it is what living in one place looks like. You have a home airport. You leave from it and you come back to it, and every trip is an out-and-back with the same hinge.

The tell is the empty middle distance: you have been to eleven countries and there is not a single line between any two of them. It doesn't mean you travel less. It means your travel is organised around returning.

2. The shuttle

One line, flown thirty or forty times, so thick it stops reading as a route and starts reading as a piece of infrastructure.

There is always a reason, and it is always one of about four: you moved for university, your family is in another country, you were in a long-distance relationship, or a job put you on the same aircraft every fortnight for two years.

This is the shape people are most surprised by, because the flights themselves were unmemorable — that is the whole point of a shuttle — and in aggregate they usually turn out to be a third of your lifetime distance. The trip you never thought of as travelling is the one that dominates the map.

3. The one big summer

A dense, tangled cluster in one region — six or eight airports, all connected to each other — floating in the middle of an otherwise sparse globe, with a single long line attaching it to home.

Somewhere between nineteen and twenty-six, most people who travel at all have exactly one of these: the months in South-East Asia, the season in South America, the year in Australia. On the map it looks like a knot, because you were moving between places rather than out and back from one.

It ages well. Five years later the cluster is still the busiest part of your map, and it was six weeks.

4. The chain

A route that goes A to B to C to D and does not return, each hop a few hundred kilometres, tracing a line across a continent.

This is the overland shape: someone crossing a region in sequence, flying the legs that were too long to do any other way. Chains are rarer than they used to be, and they are the shape most likely to include airports nobody you know has heard of.

5. The block

One continent thoroughly coloured in and almost nothing leaving it.

Europeans get this from cheap short-haul; Americans get it domestically; it happens anywhere a large, well-connected landmass makes leaving it feel like a separate category of decision. The country count is high, the distance total is low, and the globe has one busy face and one completely empty one.

Spin it round and there is nothing on the other side. That is usually the moment people start thinking about a long-haul.

6. The scatter

No pattern. Lines in every direction, few of them repeated, several long-haul, no obvious home.

This is almost always work. Consultants, engineers, crew and people with a genuinely international job produce maps with the highest totals and the least shape, because the routing was chosen by someone else.

The one that cuts across all of them: the polar cap

Separately from the six shapes, there is a binary property: does anything on your map go over the top?

Most people's maps sit in a band around the middle of the globe. A few have arcs that climb over the Arctic — the London-to-Tokyo, the Europe-to-west-coast-America routes that look like enormous detours on a flat map and are the shortest path once you see them on a sphere.

The first polar arc changes how the whole map reads, because it's the first line that only makes sense in three dimensions.

What the shape knows that the total doesn't

Two people can have flown exactly the same distance and have nothing in common:

  • Thirty-one countries clustered on two continents is a different life from thirty-one spread across six.
  • 120,000 km on one route is a commute. 120,000 km across forty routes is a decade of curiosity.
  • A map with high country count and low distance belongs to someone who lives somewhere well-connected. High distance and low country count usually means one very long line, flown repeatedly.

None of this shows up in a total, and all of it shows up in the picture. Which is the argument for keeping the log at all: the number is a by-product, and the map is the thing you actually recognise yourself in.

Finding out which one you are

You need your flights on a globe rather than in a list, and you need all of them — the shape only resolves once the boring ones are in, and the boring ones are usually the shuttle that turns out to be a third of the map.

Most people find that the map is not the one they expected. The gaps are more surprising than the lines.
