How many times around the Earth is a million miles?
A million miles is 40.2 times around the Earth. One lap of the planet at the equator is 24,901 miles, or 40,075 km, and a million miles works out to 1,609,344 km — a little over forty laps. Most people who reach that number do it without ever once picturing it.
That is what makes the circumference a useful thing to hold onto. It turns an abstract total — "I have flown about 180,000 km" — into something you can see. 180,000 km is four and a half laps of the planet.
How many miles is once around the Earth?

Measured through the poles it is fractionally less — 24,860 miles — because the Earth is not quite a sphere. Its diameter is about 43 km greater at the equator than pole to pole, which is why the summit of Chimborazo in Ecuador is further from the centre of the Earth than the summit of Everest, despite being 2,500 m shorter.
The equatorial figure is the one worth remembering, and not by accident. When the metric system was designed in the 1790s, the metre was defined so that the distance from the North Pole to the equator would be exactly 10,000,000 metres. Four of those quarter-arcs make a lap, which is why the number lands so suspiciously close to a round 40,000 km.

The thresholds that mean something
40,075 km — one lap. Just under two London–Singapore returns, or seven London–New York crossings. A single year of moderate business travel will do it.
100,000 km — two and a half laps. The point at which travel has stopped being occasional. Roughly two years of consistent long-haul.
384,400 km — Earth to the Moon. The mean distance to the Moon, and a genuinely hard milestone: nine and a half times around the planet. Reaching it takes either a decade of heavy flying or a career that involves being somewhere else most weeks.
1,609,344 km — a million miles. Forty laps. The threshold most airline loyalty programmes treat as their lifetime tier, and a number very few people reach. American's AAdvantage, United's MileagePlus and Delta's Million Miler all mark it; the mile in question is a flown mile, not an earned one, which is why it takes decades rather than credit-card years.
Working out your own number
You need three things: a list of your flights, the great circle distance of each, and the patience to add them up.
The first is the hard part. Most people can recall the last two or three years and then it gets murky. Old boarding passes, calendar entries, photo metadata and email receipts are all better sources than memory — we wrote a whole piece on reconstructing a logbook from scratch if you want to go back properly.
The second is mechanical. Great circle distance between two airports is a fixed number; you can look any pair up or compute it yourself. A few reference points to calibrate against:

Note what that table does to the arithmetic. Seven London–Paris returns is 4,816 km. One London–Singapore return is 21,770 km — four and a half times as far, in two flights rather than fourteen. The short flights are not what got you to four laps.
The third is where it gets interesting.
Why the total surprises people
Two reasons.
The first is that short flights feel disproportionately significant. A weekend in Barcelona involves airports, security, boarding, and the whole apparatus of flying — and contributes 2,200 km return. A single London–Singapore return contributes ten times that, for not much more inconvenience. Effort and distance are almost unrelated, but memory indexes on effort.
The second is that distance compounds silently. Nobody adds up as they go. The number just sits there, unrecorded, until something forces the sum — and then it turns out to be four laps of the planet.
That is genuinely most of the appeal of keeping a logbook. Not the individual entries, which are mundane, but the total, which is not.
What it looks like on a globe
There is a difference between reading "184,000 km" and seeing it.
When flights are drawn as arcs on a sphere, the total becomes shape rather than number. You can see which parts of the world you keep returning to, which hemispheres you have barely touched, and the specific handful of long-hauls that account for most of the distance. Most people's globes are lopsided in a way they had not realised — a dense knot over one continent and a couple of long threads reaching out from it.
It also makes the great circle obvious. A lap of the Earth is a straight line on a globe and a curve on a map, which is the same reason your London–Tokyo flight went over Siberia.
